At The Gentle Dentist, we want our patients in Spring Hill, Florida, and the surrounding communities to know that taking good care of your oral health benefits not just your precious pearly whites, but your gum health as well. In fact, did you know that your gums are actually a good indicator of your overall health?
So, if you are experiencing bleeding gums, what does this mean? Well, the main cause of bleeding gums is the steady buildup of plaque at the gum line, which leads to gingivitis. As you may already know, gingivitis is the first stage of gum disease. In addition to gingivitis, there are a variety of factors which may cause the gums to bleed.
Brushing too hard: brushing too hard can irritate the gums, so try using a soft-bristled toothbrush and brush with gentle, circular motions instead of sawing back and forth. Electric toothbrushes can help with this.
Vitamin deficiency: too little essential vitamins in the body, especially vitamin C and K can cause your gums to bleed.
Anemia: a lack of iron can cause a deficiency of red blood cells or of hemoglobin in the blood and cause bleeding in the gums.
Medication: blood thinners, such as aspirin and ibuprofen, as well as certain blood pressure medications can result in gum inflammation.
Smoking: the toxins emitted from smoking tobacco can irritate the gums and result in a condition called dry mouth.
Hormonal Changes: for women, pregnancy and menstruation cause a spike in your hormones which alters the chemical balance in your mouth, negatively affecting gum tissue.
Infection: if you have periodontitis, this is a serious gum infection that eventually destroys the bones supporting your teeth. Periodontitis may also increase your risk of heart attack and stroke.
